(…) Jest to na pewno lektura uniwersalna.
This groundbreaking book examines the relationship between the modernist architecture of the 1920s and 1930s and that eras preoccupations with health, cleanliness, fresh air and sunshine, exploring how utopian notions of the clean machine and the hygienist movement inspired the pure geometric forms and sparkling surfaces of early modernist buildings. Anyone with an interest in architecture and/or modernism will find this original approach to a popular theme both engaging and enlightening.
The book looks at two contrasting but equally extraordinary phases in the recent history of Japanese architecture: first, the explosive 'Bubble' era of the 1980s and early 1990s, and second, the post-'Bubble' era which leads up to the present day. The early period, also referred to as the 'new golden age of Japanese architecture', saw a spectacular overproduction of unusual buildings and urban complexes in Japan's major cities; while the period that followed, around the mid-1990s, shows work that demonstrated a sense of modesty, restraint and 'earthly' innovation.
As a complex organization, an interesting building has always an interesting epic, a story that is embedded in the organization of matter. It is this epic of making a building that is described in this book, the first in the series of "Verb Monographs", as a small homage to all those who were involved in the project. The book is structured as a replica of the way in which the building was developed by the team, with every member taking over a full design package.
The Case Study House program (1945–1966) was an exceptional, innovative event in the history of American architecture and remains to this day unique. The program, which concentrated on the Los Angeles area and oversaw the design of 36 prototype homes, sought to make available plans for modern residences that could be easily and cheaply constructed during the postwar building boom. Highly experimental, the program generated houses that were designed to redefine the modern home, and thus had a pronounced influence on architecture—American and international—both during the program`s existence and even to this day. This compact guide includes all projects featured in our XL version, with over 150 photos and plans and a map of where all houses are (or were) located.
