His works can be considered as archetypal examples of Neo-classical Renaissance and baroque architecture. His greatest undertaking was the Opera House in Paris (1861-1875), highly relevant for the subsequent development of architecture in the nineteenth century. The overall effect is harmonious but different styles and decorations are combined together through sculptures, frescos and marble.

Otto Wagner (Penzing near Vienna 1841-died Vienna, 1918) studied in both Berlin and Vienna. He was put in charge of the general plan for Vienna, under the authority of the City Hall’s Higher Committee for Construction. The principal objective was to set up a railway system and to control the Danube River. He was the mentor of Josef Hoffman and Josef Maria Olbrich. At the end of the century, during the Secession of Vienna, he worked on a number of projects, including houses for Linke Wienzeile, the Zeit telegraph office and the Postal Savings Bank (Postsparkassenamt). He was also the designer of the Steinhof Church and the second Wagner villa, among other buildings.

Dostępność: na zamówienie Gustave Alexandre Eiffel (Dijon 1832-Paris 1923). This French civil engineer and constructor, is famous for the Eiffel Tower in Paris. He studied at the École Central des Arts et Manufactures, where he demonstrated his interest in metal construction, graduated in Chemical Engineering and in 1866 founded his own company. He directed the building of an iron railway bridge at Bordeaux and the design of the movable dome of the observatory at Nice. He finished his greatest project, the Eiffel Tower, in 1889, in time for the Centennial Exposition, causing commotion and amazement among the artists of the period and the world in general. His next large-scale project was the Panama Canal.

Hailing from Vienna, Rudolph Michael Schindler (1887-1953), like his colleague Richard Neutra, emigrated to the US and applied his International Style techniques to the movement that would come to be known as California Modernism. Influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and taking cues from spatial notions found in cubism, he developed a singular style characterized by geometrical shapes, bold lines, and association of materials such as wood and concrete, as seen in his own Hollywood home (built in 1921-22) and the house he designed for P.M. Lovell in Newport Beach (1923-24).
