"W książce próbowano połączyć na równych prawach - najczęściej dotąd rozdzielaną lub jednostronnie uwypuklaną - tematykę rzeźby i małej architektury. U podstaw takiej decyzji leży przekonanie, że dzieła małej architektury, których strukturę współtworzy również rzeźba, projektowano jako organiczną całość (nieraz czynił to ten sam artysta) i tak też je postrzegano. Jednocześnie fakt, że przedstawienia rzeźbiarskie bywają nierzadko najbardziej wartościowymi składnikami ołtarza czy ambony, rządzącymi się przy tym własnymi zasadami, powoduje konieczność ich szczególnego podkreślenia. Takie ujęcie tematu napotyka na wiele trudności, ponieważ oba wspomniane elementy różnią się między innymi przeznaczeniem, zasadą budowy i sposobem wykonania.
