Le Corbusier is often remembered as having been aggressively indifferent to the sites in which he placed his buildings and plans. However, new research reveals that, in keeping with his proposition that ‘the outside is always an inside’, all of Le Corbusier’s projects responded emphatically to specific geographies. This book examines Le Corbusier’s relationship with the landscapes of five continents, in forty essays by thirty of the foremost scholars of his work.

Each age must create its own architecture out of its own technology and one which is expressive of its own Zeitgeist - the spirit of the time." — Eero Saarinen Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the 20th century's great visionaries, both in the fields of furniture design (he created the ubiquitous Knoll "Tulip" chairs and tables, for example) and in architecture. Among his greatest accomplishments are monuments that shaped architecture in postwar America and became icons in themselves: Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport, the very sculptural and fluid TWA terminal at JFK Airport in New York, and the 630 ft (192m) high Gateway Arch of St. Louis, Missouri. Marrying curves and dynamic forms with a Modernist aesthetic, he brought a whole new dimension to architecture.

Carlo Scarpa (1906–1978) was never fully appreciated during his lifetime. Instead, his work was dismissed as being "just" art, and only after his death did people begin to understand the exceptional quality of his oeuvre. This book shows the development of his individual architectural language by linking aspects of the arts with architecture.

Outsider Modernizmu - Hans Scharoun German architect Hans Scharoun (1893-1972) studied and practiced architecture his entire adult life but did not build a major building until 1963 when his impressive Berlin Philharmonie finally came to life. The fact that he stayed in Germany during the Second World War prevented him from realizing grandiose projects and caused him to concentrate more on interiors than exteriors for many years. Nevertheless, Scharoun’s sculptural designs, influenced by the expressionist-utopian circle “Gläserne Kette” of which he was a member, did not go unnoticed and were among the best of his generation.

The work of Erich Mendelsohn (1887-1953) is extraordinarily open-minded in its attitude to material and planning, as a result of his completely original form of architectural thinking. Mendelsohn`s genius lay in the fact that he was not influenced by his predecessors; rather, his imagination sprung from an entirely personal place, refusing to borrow from any existing artistic forms or styles. He became famous with the Einsteinturm in Potsdam (the supreme masterpiece of architectural expressionism, one of the most heretical and revolutionary works in history), the Hat Factory in Luckenwalde, and the Schocken Department Store in Stuttgart. To this day, Mendelsohn`s methods remain stimulating and provocative and his work begs to be (re)discovered.

"Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of volumes brought together in light." — Le Corbusier
Born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier (1887-1965) adopted his famous pseudonym after publishing his ideas in the review L'Esprit Nouveau in 1920. The few buildings he was able to design during the 1920s, when he also spent much of his time painting and writing, brought him to the forefront of modern architecture, though it was not until after World War II that his epoch-making buildings were constructed, such as the Unité d'Habitation apartment complex in Marseilles, and the chapel of Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp.
