Karta ateńska to zestaw wytycznych do projektowania nowoczesnych miast stworzony przez architektów i urbanistów związanych z organizacją CIAM (Międzynarodowe Kongresy Architektury Nowoczesnej). Zjazd CIAM IV odbył się na statku Patris II płynącym z Marsylii do Aten oraz w samych Atenach latem 1933 roku, z udziałem przedstawicieli polskiej awangardy – Heleny i Szymona Syrkusów oraz Anatolii i Romana Piotrowskich. Helena Syrkus twierdziła wręcz, że jako poliglotka odegrała kluczową rolę w opracowaniu tekstu „Postanowień” kongresu, tworzonego przez wielojęzyczne grono delegatów.
