SMALL OFFICE HOME OFFICE

The idea of what we traditionally perceive to be the work place is changing. This is partly down to a different approach towards the production system which currently focuses on positive motivation for the worker in order to carry out their task more efficiently and in short, be more cost-efficient. The foundation for this change is based upon relatively modern concepts such as ergonomics, empathy, motivation, quality and customisation. Changes have arisen as a result of meeting this need which amount to focussing and combining family with working lives, something now reflected by architects and designers working to transform conventional living and office concepts as a way of adapting to meet the new demands.

This book presents a history of the railway station, citing its most significant developments in terms of architecture and design. From the building of the Gare de l'Est in 1850s Paris, to the striking proposal for a new Pennsylvania Station in New York City in the late 1990s, the stations are documented through archival material, including engineering drawings and period photographs, as well as contemporary photographs revealing major restoration projects. Other stations featured include the Santa Justa station in Seville by Antonio Cruz and Antonio Oritz, a station in Kyoto by Hiroshi Hara, the Lyon TGV Station by Santiago Calatrava, and the Arnhem Station by Dutch architects Ben von Berkel and Caroline Bos of UN Studio, one of the today's leading design firms.
