The requirements confronting our workplaces have recently undergone a dramatic transformation. Constantly shifting workspace populations and varying uses of workspace call for flexible spatial structures, and so do new professions and innovative working methods. The planning of workspaces is influenced by the digitalization of our storage media as well as by new materials and building technologies.
Since it is now clear that in the future many raw materials will only be available to us in limited quantities, scientists have for some time been conducting intensive research into possible alternatives. Sustainability is the order of the day and the magic word for a better future in politics and industry. Moreover, environmental consciousness and a penchant for thinking in terms of material cycles have caught on with consumers : the use of environmentally compatible materials and production methods is desired, even taken for granted by the client.

Dr hab, inż, architekt Adam M. Szymski jest profesorem na Wydziale Budownictwa i Architektury Politechniki Szczecińskiej, gdzie kieruje Zakladem Teorii i Metodologii Projektowania w Instytucie Architektury i Planowania Przestrzennego. Jest także kierownikiem Zakładu Projektowania Architektury Krajobrazu na Wydziale Rolnym Akademii Rolniczej w Szczecinie. Główną dyscypliną badawczą, którą zajmuje się Profesor A. M, Szymski, jest teoria rozwoju formy architektonicznej w jej aspekcie kulturowym, w tym szczególnie rozwój architektury dwudziestego wieku.
W ostatnich latach buduje się ok. 70 tys. nowych mieszkań rocznie, a traci się z powodu braku remontów ok. 50 tys. rocznie - obrazuje to problem tzw. luki odtworzeniowej, zwłaszcza przy braku ok. 3 mln mieszkań w naszym kraju. Konieczność budowy nowych mieszkań i sukcesywnych remontów istniejących zasobów wydaje się oczywistością, lecz ciągle jest ona nierozwiązana. W Polsce brak jest ustawy o rewitalizacji istniejących zasobów (od lat w przygotowaniu). Brak jest mechanizmów finansowych i organizacyjnych do modernizacji. Czy zostaną zmienione metody postępowania przy pracach projektodawczych i wykonawczych rewitalizacji wykonywanej według zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju? Uwarunkowania ekologiczne są jedynie częścią wszystkich aspektów występujących w projektowaniu zrównoważonym.
