With the increasing sophistication of CAD and other design software, there is now a wide array of means for both designing and fabricating architecture and its components. The proliferation of advanced modelling software and hardware has enabled architects and students to conceive and create designs that would be very difficult to do using more traditional methods. The use of CAD technologies in the production of physical models, prototypes and individual elements is increasingly widespread through processes such as CAD/CAM, CNC milling and rapid prototyping.
In a world of cities, suburbanization is the most visible and pervasive phenomenon. Global sprawl engulfs us but it does so in remarkably differentiated ways. Lighting is a key feature of almost all interiors but it is often treated in a rather superficial manner in most books. An unusual journey between Breslau and Dessau, from the World Cultural Heritage of the Centennial Hall (1913) to the World Cultural Heritage of Bauhaus dating from the twenties: and there are many highpoints of modern architecture in-between—in Görlitz, Dresden-Hellerau, Leipzig or Chemnitz, for example. Almost all the great modernist architects ar gathered together here, from Hans Poelzig and Henry van de Velde to Heinrich Tessenow, Richard Riemerschmid, Hans Scharoun, Erich Mendelsohn and even Walter Gropius.
