Przedmiotem monografii jest jakość przestrzeni urbanistycznychwych w Polsce, które powstały przed okresem transformacji ustrojowej, czyli przed 1989 rokiem. Zmiana systemu ustrojowego w Polsce z jednej strony przyczyniła się do wyzwolenia przestrzeni osiedlowych z ram zaleceń normatywnych i infrastrukturalnych, a z drugiej zrodziła nowe potrzeby. Wielkie zespoły mieszkaniowe powstały również przed określeniem zasad rozwoju zrównoważonego (1987), który obecnie uznaje się za wyznacznik współczesnej jakości życia. Dogmat ten przyjęto więc za podstawę pracy i według niego przeprowadzono analizy badawcze.

The situation is turned on its head, however, when the architect becomes his/her own client when building, renovating or redecorating their own home.
