Podczas dwóch ostatnich dekadach zużycie energii pierwotnej na świecie wzrosło o 49%, a emisji CO2 do atmosfery – o 43%. Wzrost tych dwóch parametrów jest już niezależny od wzrostu gospodarczego. Konsumpcja energii wzrosła o 1,1% w 2009 r., czyli w roku światowej recesji.
