Pierwsze wydanie tej pracy z roku 1993 r. jest już od dawna wyczerpane. Książka stała się ona nieoczekiwanie zaczątkiem serii opisującej zabytkowe kościoły kolejnych regionów Polskiego Podtatrza, Pienin, Orawy i Skalnego Podhala. Poszerzone opisy kościołów poprzedzone zostały krótkimi zarysami rozwoju osadniczego poszczelnych miejscowości. Materiał ilustracyjny powiększony został ponad trzykrotnie w porównaniu z I wydaniem. Impulsem do wznowienia pracy stały się w głównej mierze rewelacyjne odkrycia zespołu średniowiecznych malowideł ściennych kościele niedzickim.

Jest to ostatni tom składający się na serię "Zabytkowych kościołów Polskiego Podtatrza". Obejmuje on region Niżniego Podhala, którego północną granicę wytycza wyraźnie masyw Gorców. Granica południowa tego regionu, oddzielająca go od Skalnego Podhala, nie jest jednoznacznie określona. Dla celów niniejszej pracy przyjęto, że przebiega ona wzdłuż linii Białka Tatrzańska Biały Dunajec - Chochołów, przy czym miejscowości te wyłączono z obszaru Niżniego Podhala.
