Książka Architektura od abc ... powstała z inicjatywy Komitetu Architektury i Urbanistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Idea jej napisania zrodziła się w roku 2002 na konferencji, która odbyła się w pałacu Prezydenta RP w Wiśle w ramach sesji wyjazdowej Komitetu AiU. Tematem wiodącym konferencji był problem postępujqcej dewastacji przestrzeni miejskich oraz potrzeba ochrony istniejqcych obiektów kultury i cennych przyrodniczo krajobrazów. W wyniku ożywionej dyskusji podję o uchwałę, mającą na celu poprawę w naszym kraju edukacji odnoszącej się do złożonych problemów kształtowania przestrzeni oraz podniesienie poziomu podstawowej wiedzy o architekturze.
