Asmara jest jedynym zespołem urbanistycznym na świecie, który został konsekwentnie zbudowany w stylu Art Deco, Novocento i modernizmu. Z tego powodu Asmara nazywana jest też „Frozen City”. Jej architektura była zainspirowana marzeniem Mussoliniego o wykreowaniu rzymskiego imperium w Afryce, ale w istocie efekt wyszedł zupełnie inny.
