FAITH SPIRITUAL ARCHITECTURE
The role that religion has played in the development of art and architecture is unquestionable. The religious factor is as old as humanity itself and throughout history constructions have been erected with the aim of extolling the gods. Everyone has heard of examples such as the Egyptian or Aztec pyramids, the Christian cathedrals or mosques like the famous Blue Mosque. These are all examples of sacred buildings which also represent an undeniable artistic and architectural value. The construction of religious buildings seems to have been forgotten by the masses and replaced by other more modern and popular architectural typologies, such as public or corporate architecture.
HIGH DENSITY HOUSING
The pressure exerted on cities in recent decades is extremely evident. There is no need for one to consult offi cial statistics to realize that cities are turning into the place where most of the population prefers to live and work. Residing downtown or in inner city areas, where business and cultural activities are to be found, is very practical and with more advantages than those that were to be had in suburban areas only a few years ago.

HIGHRISES: SOCIAL LIVING
Collective housing has played a major role in the architectural advances of the last century, in the process provoking its fair share of controversy, admiration and disapprobation. While apartment blocks may be seen as more or less fashionable according to the prevailing wind, the decline of the nuclear family and the manifestation of new models of cohabitation have confirmed their value as high-density housing that can limit sprawl and allow for significant aesthetic expression. With other pertinent issues including sustainability and the built environment's carbon footprint, as well as urban cohesiveness, social living is right back on the agenda.
HOMES ON DISTINCTIVE LAND
The land on which the following residences are built is the connecting thread of this volume. The plots, be it their topography or geological composition, determine the design of the houses and are a challenge for architects. The allotments' different heights and the geological characteristics define the organization and planning of the structures. Climatic elements such as wind, sun and rain determine the inclusion of energy-saving systems like a tank for rainwater or making use of the breezes to cool down the houses. The surroundings, mainly beautiful landscapes and ecological diversity, delimit the presence of houses, thus we can find some housing integrated into the scenery and other that provokes a clear visual contrast between nature and human creation.
KINDERGARTENS, SCHOOLS AND...
Human development during childhood and adolescence is particularly important, and the quality of the spaces where it takes place can be highly influential in a delicate process. Numerous studies explore the effects of architecture on children's behaviour and have their effect on the design of educational establishments. This book gathers a selection of schools and nurseries that aim to create imaginative and evocative atmospheres.
LIVING IN SMALL SPACES
Is a large canvas really necessary to paint a masterpiece? The obvious answer would be that the size of the canvas and the brilliance of an artwork bear no mutual relation. This book demonstrates just this point in the world of creative interior design. The continuous downsizing of urban apartments has led to a search for new design solutions to make a virtue out of limited available space. The final result is a philosophy of life based on the small, flexible and adaptable. This book presents 56 apartments with considerable size constraints and shows the inventive living spaces that can result.

RENOVATING FOR LIVING
Sometimes restoring a building is more complicated than constructing a new one, not simply because of the historical value of the part which is to be preserved, but also bearing in mind the state of the structure is often not known before the project gets underway. This makes these commissions a real challenge as the architect must put into practice very different strategies to those deployed on a new-build, often resulting in a very satisfying experience. This book presents 28 case studies of sensitive conversions, including work from Enric Miralles, Jo Crepain and Greg Gong.

Dostępność: na zamówienie The ramifications of architecture and design in shops and shopping centres have become the subject of academic study and business strategy, reflecting the expansion of such premises' role in social and trading environments. The use of furniture, materials, illumination and colour can all be significant factors in guaranteeing the customer's interest in the products on sale and the associated 'brand', quite independently of those items themselves.
