His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors.

Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens has called on some of the world’s top architects to design summer pavilions – temporary structures that are erected next to the Gallery itself for a three-month period. The Serpentine, which was built in 1934 as a tea pavilion, opened in 1970 as a showplace for exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists ranging from Matthew Barney to Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelley, Louise Bourgeois or Rachel Whiteread.

Since the early twentieth century, Latin America has been home to some of the most compelling architecture - from the large-scale and otherworldly civic structures of the Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer to the more intimate work of Mexico's Luis Barragan. In her new book "Latin American Houses", historian Mercedes Daguerre shows that this tradition of architectural innovation lives on in the work of such contemporary architects as 2006 Pritzker Prize-winner Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Brazil), Mathias Klotz (Chile), Angelo Bucci (Argentina), and LBC Arquitectos (Mexico), among others.Focusing on one-family houses that have been built over the past decade, this lively new title explores the elegance and innovation with which today's Latin American architects evolve their modernist heritage.

W ostatnich latach buduje się ok. 70 tys. nowych mieszkań rocznie, a traci się z powodu braku remontów ok. 50 tys. rocznie - obrazuje to problem tzw. luki odtworzeniowej, zwłaszcza przy braku ok. 3 mln mieszkań w naszym kraju. Konieczność budowy nowych mieszkań i sukcesywnych remontów istniejących zasobów wydaje się oczywistością, lecz ciągle jest ona nierozwiązana. W Polsce brak jest ustawy o rewitalizacji istniejących zasobów (od lat w przygotowaniu). Brak jest mechanizmów finansowych i organizacyjnych do modernizacji. Czy zostaną zmienione metody postępowania przy pracach projektodawczych i wykonawczych rewitalizacji wykonywanej według zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju? Uwarunkowania ekologiczne są jedynie częścią wszystkich aspektów występujących w projektowaniu zrównoważonym. 

Książka przeznaczona zarówno dla badaczy historii i kultury – etnologów, kulturoznawców, historyków, jak i dla wszystkich, którzy z zamiłowania zaczytują się w publikacjach dotyczących historii kultury.
