Indeks: Styl zakopiański
Obszerny materiał fotograficzny, składający się zarówno z licznych fotografii archiwalnych, jak też zdjęć współczesnych ukazuje rozwój koncepcji stylu, przedstawia powstałe zgodnie z jego ideą budynki mieszkalne i sakralne, przedmioty użytkowe i elementy wystroju wnętrza.
W świat zakopiańskich willi wprowadza tekst Teresy Jabłońskiej, dyrektor Muzeum Tarzańskiego, a w wydobyciu piękna i klimatu tej sztuki pomaga doskonały projekt Leszka Szurkowskiego.
Styl zakopiański był fenomenem w historii polskiej architektury i sztuki użytkowej. Jego twórca – Stanisław Witkiewicz – na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, w Zakopanem – małej wówczas wiosce pod Tatrami – formułował teoretyczne zasady swej nowej idei i projektował piękne, drewniane wille, obiekty sakralne i rzemiosło artystyczne. Z Witkiewiczem współdziałali przedstawiciele polskiej elity kulturalnej owego czasu, a także górale – cieśle i snycerze, którzy wprowadzali w życie koncepcje artysty. To do ich właśnie, góralskiej architektury i sztuki ludowej nawiązał Witkiewicz, tworząc swoje projekty i dążąc do przekształcenia swych wizji w polski styl narodowy.

The approach of Informing Architecture by Materiality opens the way to an innovative use of materials in the design professions. Taking material qualities and properties such as texture, elasticity, transparency and fluidity as a point of departure, the concept described and employed here transcends the conventional definitions of building materials. Instead, the focus is on a multitude of material operations, like folding and bending, carving and cutting, weaving and knitting, mirroring and screening. The featured design strategies and methods address established and "new"; materials alike. They are applied both to the scale of the detail and the entire building.

Vast areas of the Netherlands and other states seem to be filling up with a suburban 'matter' of low cost housing, low rent offices, warehouses and other low density elements. How are we to cope with this matter that is turning our environments into one 'sea of mediocrity', one vast 'greyness', an equation of difference and individualism? Is it possible to reconsider this situation by carrying density to extremes and ruffling the texture with inserts or polarities? This book examines the possibilities of these extremes.
